La Taunya Green is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Unfamiliar Blessings, Inc a non-profit organization that creates and distributes specialized survival necessity kits for the Unhoused Community. La Taunya has worked for the Los Angeles Superior Courts for over 30 years and has been a Court Services Supervisor for 17 years. It is La Taunya's passion and love for people that lead her to start a non-profit geared towards assisting the unhoused and those in transition. La Taunya's compassion for people started when she became a Girl Scout in the first grade. As a Girl Scout, she was taught so much, from how to survive in the wilderness; to being an entrepreneur by selling cookies and calendars. She was given extensive tasks to complete from a Girl Scout workbook either as a group or individually to earn badges, pins, and metals, this is where she learned the value of "hard work”, “dedication”, “leadership”, “teamwork” and “community service." As an African American woman of the 21st century and a Lifetime Girl Scout Member, La Taunya realized that her life could not just be about her, it had to involve helping others and changing the world.

La Taunya is a member of Faithful Central Bible Church in Inglewood, CA where she has served as an Ambassador on the Experience Team. La Taunya is also a member of the Empowerment Congress where she serves on the Homeless Working Group committee. She is an active member of the Dream It Build It Collective and the BeYOUtiful Minds network organizations. Her kit assembly organizational skills have granted her the opportunity to lead and direct large groups in preparing and assembling hygiene kits for Loyola High School in Los Angeles and has adopted her a permanent volunteer position as the Service Project Day Coordinator for the Inner-City Law Center in Los Angeles. La Taunya’s passion for the youth has elected her to becoming a member of the Inglewood Unified School Districts Asset Management Committee. With a high population of Unhoused Youth in our schools La Taunya is praying Unfamiliar Blessings Inc could formulate a partnership with our schools to supply specialized survival necessity kits.

Unfamiliar Blessings, Inc. focuses on the unsanitary factors affecting our unhoused communities in the Los Angeles area and are currently expanding services across the United States. Unfamiliar Blessings, Inc. has distributed and delivered more than two thousand homeless kits to surrounding communities and transitional facilities and have raised more than $5,000.00 to continue their efforts. La Taunya’s hopes and dreams for Unfamiliar Blessings, Inc. is to distribute kits all over the world. In 2006, while vacationing in Europe she noticed and was shocked to see unhoused people living along a canal in Paris, she believes this is where God gave her the vision to help the unhoused and the thought that there are homeless people everywhere not just in Los Angeles. La Taunya’s constant prayer is that she will be able to go back to Paris to distribute Unfamiliar Blessings kits to those unhoused persons living along that canal. In 2023, La Taunya came up with an idea to start a movement called the UBMOVEMENT. Persons can purchase kits, place them in their cars for when they encounter an unhoused person, they gift them the kit, ask permission to take a picture or video of them holding the kit and post it on Unfamiliar Blessings Inc’s and their social media platforms by tagging Unfamiliar Blessings Inc and #5000kits2024. And just like that, they have become an “Unfamiliar Blessing” to a stranger.

La Taunya Green and Unfamiliar Blessings Inc is changing the way people give to those in need, “An Unfamiliar Blessing.” La Taunya’s daily prayer is to meet someone new, change someone’s life, be a blessing to someone and perform a random act of kindness.

Why We Do What We Do

Question for you?

What happens when you are driving in your car and you see a homeless person?

How does it make you feel?

What thoughts come to mind?

Do you wonder why they are homeless?

Do you feel heartbroken and wish you could help them?

GOD SPOKE: Unfamiliar Blessings, Inc. was formulated on just a thought, a concern and a care…

Several years ago while exiting the freeway I saw a teenage girl. I noticed she didn’t have extra baggage, nor did she have a purse. All she had with her was the cardboard sign she was holding. It read, “Homeless, need money for food.” I immediately went into care mode, and wanted to give her money.  But I was too far away from her to get her attention. Then I went into concern mode, wondering, “How is she surviving with nothing but the clothes on her back?” As I started to drive away, I went into thought mode, and started thinking about all the ways I could help this teenage girl.

My mind was all over the place, I was thinking of everything she may have needed, and what I could do to give her some of those things. My first thought: She needs food; I could purchase a restaurant gift card. My next thought: She needs the basic toiletry necessities: soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, feminine products, comb, brush and even water. That’s when the search for a drug store began. After purchasing several items, I placed them in a nice bag with a handle. “This will make it easy for her to carry;” I thought. With hopes she would still be there, I went back to that location. I drove around for a while looking for her. I really wanted to give her those items, but she was gone.

I kept the bag in my car in hopes that I would see her again or encounter another homeless person to which I could give the bag. And though I had no idea at that time, my desire and efforts to help a homeless teenage girl was God speaking to me; was the beginning stages of the development of Unfamiliar Blessings!

AN UNFAMILIAR BLESSING

One day at work I was summoned by one of my co-workers to assist a woman in the lobby area who asked to speak with a supervisor. As I approached the counter I noticed this beautiful woman and little boy staring at me. I asked my co-worker, “Is this the person who needs to speak with me?" When she said yes, I smiled and walked toward the woman and her son.  But the woman began to cry. She asked if I were the supervisor. I said, “Yes.” My name is La Taunya. How may I help you? She continued to cry, and through tears she told me her situation. She and her son had been living in a homeless shelter that was mistreating them.  She wanted to know how and to whom she could report that shelter.  I did not know how to assist the woman, but I immediately went into concern mode. I learned that she not only needed another place to stay, but that her son was sick and needed medicine. I then went into care mode, and went into my office and pulled out all the money in my wallet to give to her.

While emptying out my wallet, I went into thought mode, and I remembered that one of my co-workers along with her church put together homeless kits, which they distributed over the weekend. She actually had a few leftover kits with her, which I promptly solicited on behalf of this woman and her son.

It was that day, I was able to give this woman money and two homeless kits. She and her son were grateful and thankful. As we hugged, she told me that I was God sent, and there should be more people in the world like me. I thanked her for her kind words, and walked away in tears.

It was at that moment, I realized my purpose in life: being a blessing to those who do not know me, an unknown gesture, something unfamiliar. Then it dawned on me, although I was being the blesser, in the end I am the one who really gets truly blessed.
